Conducting Polymer Electrochemical Switching as an Easy Means for Designing Active Plasmonic Devices
Abstract
Due to the continuously increasing demand for ultimate minia-turization of photonic and electronic systems, plasmonic andmolecular electronics devices are currently booming as alternativetechnologies because of their very promising potential in writing, reading, storing, and processing information at the nanoscale.Plasmonics is an emerging branch of photonics which usesnanostructured materials. Indeed, some metal nanoparticles are well-known to exhibit strong absorption in the visible and near-infraredrange due to excitation of localized surface plasmons (LSP). Thefrequency of LSP mainly depends on the size, shape, and spacingof the particle and on the dielectric functions of the substrate andsurrounding medium. Even though the LSP resonance can bematched to almost any desired wavelength from the visible to thenear-infrared region, it cannot be easily tuned reversibly by anexternal physical input. Among plasmonic devices, filters,1waveguides,1,2polarizers,3and nanoscopic light sources4have beenreported, but active plasmonic devices are still lacking even thoughfirst steps have been realized.5-8
