Density dependent prey selection in Ilyocoris (Naucoridae)


Analyses of the response of adult and of 5th instar larval water bugs {Ilyocoris cimicoides L., Heteroptera: Naucoridae) to increasing densities of three size‐classes of two different prey species over different periods of time revealed the following data: 1. The number of prey items killed and the quantity of dry matter consumed increased with prey density. 2. In the presence of similar prey types and sizes, adults captured significantly more prey items than 5th instar larvae did. 3. The number of prey captured at a given prey density decreased, and the total quantity of dry matter ingested increased with prey size. 4. These naucorids caught more Asellus than Corixa. 5. Success rates were higher for size 2 prey items of both prey types and higher for Asellus than for Corixa.
