Résumé

The archaeological site of Ulpiana is located on the territory of the municipality of Gračanica eight km southeast of the capital of Kosovo, Prishtina. It extends over 35 ha of an agricultural plain, at the foot of a hilly system which borders it to the south and along a river, the Gracanka, which flows 300 m away. north of its walls. The city was established in a well-known mining area, at the crossroads of two major axes: a first road linked the Dalmatian coast to the Danubian Limes and Dacia, a second to Stobi and Thessaloniki. Its Roman foundation was linked to the conquest of Dacia, for which the province of Moesia Superior served as a rear base, as its name suggests, which takes up the gentile of Trajan. Two dedications specify that it enjoyed municipal status in the 2nd century. Not offering it the superior status of a colony like Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, was it signaling the presence of an earlier urban entity? This is what our excavations suggest. The city, mentioned by the geographer Ptolemy, was one of the obligatory passages of the journeys from East to West. It had to face the various barbarian incursions of the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries AD, but it would be wrong to see there the explanation of the evolution of its town planning, particularly in Late Antiquity.
