Using heat-pump for simultaneous air conditioning and fresh water production by membrane distillation: performance prediction

Résumé

The building sector accounts for 40% of the world’s energy consumption especially for air-conditioning and refrigeration. Furthermore, cold production is associated with hot air flowing out of the condensers responsible for the urban heat island effect. The proximity of buildings and their cooling equipment creates hot outdoor environment provoking higher cooling needs and lower performance of the air-conditioners. This waste heat might be used for fresh-water production using membrane distillation. The objective of this study is thus to couple an AGMD unit with a heat pump for the simultaneous production of cold and fresh water by desalination. The work presented here deals with the experimental characterization of an AGMD pilot plant with a view to its coupling with a heat pump. Based on the experimental results a model was developed to predict AGMD performance. The experimental work was focused on operating conditions compatible with the use of a heat pump to heat the feed water. Experiments were thus performed with feed water temperature in the range 25-65°C while the temperature in the cold channel was about 16°C. Several other parameters were studied: feed/coolant flow rates, air gap thickness, flow direction and nature of the feed solution. In parallel, a 1D model was built using heat and mass transfer equations and literature correlations to simulate the operation of the AGMD pilot plant. The theoretical model was validated with the experimental data by comparing the permeate fluxes. The maximum discrepancy between simulated and experimental values is 10% whatever the operating conditions. The developed model has been used to design and build a pilot-scale unit including a refrigerated unit and an AGMD module. Furthermore, it will also be used to simulate the operation of a full-scale heat pump for building air-conditioning coupled with an AGMD distillation unit.
