Space, power and migration in the historical novels of William Ospina

William Ospina's trilogy recovers part of the forgotten and most extensive poem in the Castilian language Elegías de varones ilustres de Indias. The author uses narrative procedures that saturate the fragment of the original poem with details, such as the imposing presence of Colombian spaces. Through myths, the story of Pedro de Ursúa's ride through Colombian territory and the narrator's metamorphosis, Ospina conceives an ambiguous revision of the past and of the Colombian identity in consonance with the present. Thus, the versatile writer seeks to narrate the epilogue of the current Colombian conflict, whose node is the Colombian territory, including, among others, the phenomenon of forced internal displacement and paramilitarism. Our objective is to analyse how the trilogy establishes the question of Colombianity directly associated with power, migration and spaces, but also the dialectic of man-language, art-identity and fiction-history through a structural and generic study of the work. From a review through the discourses of reception, a generic analysis, and the exploration of the characters through space, we were able to determine that the question of identity addressed in the work is problematic. On the one hand, it extends to the author himself, generating discourses of tension. On the other hand, the baroque style, which attempts to decipher Colombianity through myths and the relationship between man and his environment, is nothing other than the result of a problematic relationship between the American man and spaces.
